In the 16th century, Thomas Gell constructed the first recorded house, now known as Hopton Hall. The Gell family, known for overseeing various constructions in the Derbyshire region, including The Knockerdown, developed Hopton Hall.

Originally established in 1838 as 'The Greyhound,' the inn took its name from the Gell family crest featuring a dog. Eventually, it earned the local affectionate nickname 'Nock-a-down.'

In 1919, the Gell family sold The Knockerdown, leading to subsequent ownership changes, culminating in its acquisition by Marstons Brewery in 1931.

Fast forward to 2023, and The Knockerdown rejoined the Hopton Hall Estate. Under new ownership, the historic pub underwent renovation to restore its glory and reopen its doors.

We strive to pay homage to its extensive history, with the family's heritage reflected in the décor and ambiance of The Knockerdown. Whether you're a past visitor or a regular, we eagerly anticipate welcoming you back to this historically rich local pub.
